The Bible recognizes that the sun exercises control over certain processes of life in the world, and it sees this as a sign that God created the world and continues to care for it (Gen 1:14-18; Deut 33:13-14; Matt 5:45). The sun is a symbol of permanency and endurance (Ps 72:5,17; 89:36), but it is not eternal. It is something God has created, and therefore it must not become an object of worship (Deut 4:19; Ps 136:7-9; Ezek 8:16-18; Rom 1:18-23). The sun was darkened at the time of Jesus’ crucifixion, and will be darkened again at the time of his return to judge the world (Matt 27:45; Mark 13:24-27).
