The name Isaac, which means “he who makes laugh,” comes from his parents’ reaction when God told Abraham that he and his wife Sarah would be 90 years old. , he would have a son (Genesis 17:17; 18:12). Isaac was Abraham’s second son; His first child, Ishmael, came through Hagar, Sarah’s servant, because Sarah wanted to give Abraham a family (Genesis 16:1-2). Sara died when Isaac was almost forty years old. After her death, Abraham sent one of his servants to find a wife for Isaac, who was from his family, because Abraham decided that his son should not have a Canaanite wife (Genesis 2
:1-51). Abraham’s servant prayed that he would succeed in finding a suitable wife, and God directed his search. At the age of

Isaac was born at the age of sixty, the father of twins Jacob and Esau. While Isaac favored his eldest son Esau, Rebekah’s favorite son was Jacob. This created great rivalry in the family and resulted in the younger son, Jacob, receiving the inheritance and blessing from his father that would have belonged to the older son, Esau, after Rebekah and Jacob betrayed Isaac and Esau. . Isaac saw through the deception but was unable to undo the blessing he gave Jacob (Genesis 27). Rebekah learned of Esau’s plan to kill Jacob after Isaac’s death and convinced Isaac to send Jacob with his brother Laban to find him a wife among his relatives. Once again, Isaac blesses Jacob before sending him on his way and prays that God will give Jacob the blessing that he gave Abraham.
Abraham died when Isaac was about seventy-five years old, and gave Isaac all that he had (Genesis 25:5). Although Ishmael was expelled when Isaac was weaned, they both buried Abraham (Genesis 25:9). The Bible is not specific about their relationship, and the descendants of Ishmael and Isaac were historically enemies; the hostility has continued to this day. But it’s interesting to note that these two men apparently came together to mourn their father.
When there was a famine in the land, God appeared to Isaac and told him not to go to Egypt, but to stay in the land. God promised to be with Isaac, bless him, and give the land to Isaac’s descendants. God confirmed the covenant he made with Abraham, saying that he would make his offspring as numerous as the stars and through them would bless all the nations of the earth (Genesis 26:1-6).
