Who was Joseph, New Testament
Husband of the mother of Jesus Mary. Joseph was a descendant of David (Matthew 1:1-16; Luke 3:23-38) and lived in Nazareth. He married Mary, and shortly before the wedding, the angel Gabriel approached Mary and announced that she had been chosen to be the mother of the Savior (Luke 1:26-35).
But the Jews considered Joseph the father of Jesus, and the child Jesus treated him as such (Lk 2,8.51). Warned by heavenly dreams of the danger Jesus was in, Joseph saved his life by fleeing to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-1). After Herod’s death, the angel commanded Joseph to take the boy back to Israel (Matthew 2:19-23).
