(Dedication, consecration).
The Christian must dedicate all his goods to the Lord and every minute of his life, with all his heart, with all his soul, with all his mind and with all his strength, Mar 10:21, March 12.
Attitude of welcome and commitment, of affection and devotion, of interest and preference for a person, place, ideal or behavior. Religiously, Sto. Thomas Aquinas defines it in the Summa Theologica as “the will to surrender to things destined for divine service” (II-II. P. 82. a.1).
Its object can be God Himself and His Messenger Jesus Christ, and then the devotion is worship. And they can also be sacramental deeds, pious deeds, saints, sanctuaries, and anything that directs the mind and will toward God.
Devotion is based on faith, backed by intelligence. If you don’t believe in something or someone, you cannot have abandonment, devotion to it. But it affects emotions, preferences, relationships with the church, and the concrete actions that devotion inspires in people. But faith is not devotion, but the engine that promotes, controls and maintains it.
