ONU prepares project against recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The United Nations (UN) is preparing a resolution against the recognition by the United States of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This diplomatic maneuver would be a way to demonstrate the isolation of the Americans within the Security Council.
As a permanent member of the Security Council and with veto power, the United States is Israel’s main defender, having blocked other drastic measures in the past in favor of the Jewish state.
According to the AFP news agency, a senior Palestinian diplomat said that they already have “most importantly, the support of 14 of the 15 members of the Security Council” for this future text.
This was evidenced last Friday when the United States was totally isolated at the emergency meeting of the Security Council, convened to debate the announcement of Donald Trump on the unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
All the other members of the Council criticized the decision. The most widely used argument was about the violation of previous UN resolutions, insisting that Jerusalem be part of a negotiated settlement between Israelis and Palestinians.
Riyad Mansour, the UN ambassador for Palestine who has observer status, told AFP that the new resolution would ask the United States to “nullify” its decision. However, several diplomatic sources claim, that “language” would ultimately be thought to secure the support of the other 14 member countries of the Security Council.
The ultimate goal would be to pressure the United States for the Trump administration to present the peace project they promised, as long as it takes into account the interests of the Palestinians.
The recognition of Jerusalem as a capital is avoided by the international community since the creation of Israel in 1948. The eastern portion of the city was taken back from Jordan after the War of its days in 1967. On the occasion, Israel passed a law, declaring that the city would be its “indivisible” capital, a term that Trump did not use in his pronouncement.
During the negotiations in recent decades, the Palestinians demand that East Jerusalem be the capital of a future State of Palestine.
