The parable of the new wine in old wineskins

LUKE 5: 33-38

33 And they said to him, Why do John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast many times and pray while you eat and drink? 34 Jesus said to them, “Can you make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them? 35 The day will come when the groom will no longer be with them. Yes, they will fast that day. 36 He also told them a parable: No one cuts a piece of a new garment to repair an old garment. Doing so will not only ruin the new dress, but the patch will not fit the old dress well. 37 Neither will. New wine in old wineskins, because new wine will cause the wine cloths to break, then the wine will spill and the wineskins will be destroyed.38 New wine must be put into new wineskins. The wine and the wineskin are preserved. Old wine wants to drink new because they say: “Old wine is better.”

This is the second illustration that Jesus mentions according to the context treated in the parable of the repair with a new garment, but now we must analyze what happens when new wine is poured into old wineskins *, they will break and the wineskin will break. get lost, because when the wine ferments gases and when the old wineskins harden they stop cracking, they are not as flexible as the new ones, that is why new wine must be put into new wineskins; This is the message of Christ, new wine, it did not fit in the old wineskins, Judaism that rejected the teachings of the Messiah.

These old wineskins could not bear these words, an example of this is what is said in John 6: 60-61 “Upon hearing this, many of his disciples said:“ This word is harsh; Who can hear? Jesus, realizing that his disciples were murmuring about it, said to them: “Is this scandalous to you?” The Jews who a day before were effusive, wanting to make Jesus king of Israel by the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish, the next day most of them did not follow him, because Jesus Christ began to speak to them of the need to eat his flesh and drink his blood, to live eternally and remain in him.

The container where that new wine will be must be like this, sinners running towards the true God, without prejudice, without disbelief, seeking forgiveness and an open heart, to receive salvation, but if we go before God with all these traditions and thoughts that by works of justice we are accepted by God, we will not be able to enjoy all the great blessings that we have in Christ Jesus.

The last verse 39 refers to those who are rooted in tradition and inflexible, who think that only the old are the best. Jesus Christ did not come to abolish the law but to confirm it (Matthew 5: 17-30), he came to confirm the promises to the patriarchs and mercy to the Gentiles (Romans 15: 8-9), therefore, we who receive the beautiful news of the gospel of the glory of God in Christ, we must always live with gratitude and reverence.

Odres: it is a container made of leather, usually goat, which is sewn and glued everywhere except the one that corresponds to the neck of the animal and contains liquids such as wine or oil and other substances such as butter and cheese.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with you all.
