He was born to Abraham in Ur, a Chaldean city. He probably lived between 2000 and 1500 B.C.
Son of Terah, descendant of Shem. He married his sister from his father’s Saray side. He left Ur with his wife and they went to Haran with his nephew Lot.
Having received the promise that God would make him a “great nation”, he moved to the region of Canaan, where he lived as a nomad. Famine forced him to go to Egypt, though he was exiled because he presented his wife as Sarah’s sister.
Having returned to the land of Canaan, he left Lot because of disputes between them and his herdsmen; Lot stayed near Sodom and continued to wander. Later, he saved Lot, who was a prisoner of Kordorlahomor, king of Elam, and who was blessed by Melchizedek, priest of the king of Salem.
God promised him a son from his wife’s Sara and he repeated his first promises, confirming them in an alliance. After renewing the covenant, he changed his name Abram to Abraham and Sarah to Sarah and instituted the rite of circumcision. Accompanied by two angels, God again promised him that he would have a son by his wife. When he told her that he would destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of the wickedness of their inhabitants, he asked her not to. God promised to save the cities if he found ten righteous, but the danger was not found.
He had his first child Ishmael (born when Abraham was 86) by Hagar, an Egyptian slave. Arab Muslims consider her their ancestor. Isaac, born to Sarah when Abraham was 100 years old, was the first of his legitimate descendants.
God asked him to sacrifice Isaac as a test of his faith, though out of obedience he let the victim escape and rewarded him with a renewal of promise. Islamic tradition refers to Ishmael, not Isaac, in the sacrifice.
How old did Abraham die?
After Sara’s death, he married Queturá and had six more children.
He died according to the Bible at the age of 175 when he was buried next to Sarah in the Machpelah cave in what is now Hebron. According to the Book of Moses (11.27; 25.10) he is considered the father of the Hebrews. For Muslims, Abraham, called Ibrahim, is the ancestor of the Arabs because he is the ancestor of Ishmael, whom they consider descendants.
Why did Jehovah change Abraham’s name?

Promises God Made to Abraham
Abraham came from Ur of the Chaldeans, probably an area of present-day Iraq that was very prosperous in his day and characterized by extreme polytheism.
In the book of Genesis a genealogy is presented to Abraham, to later describe him as the founder of the only alliance with God and the depositor of several divine promises: descendants, the blessing of all nations and the land of Canaan. .
But to receive this promise, Abraham must leave everything that makes him who he is: his family, his town and his city to accept an unknown destiny that will lead him to wander through what is now Syria, Egypt and Palestine.
Why did God change Abraham’s name?
