A proposal sent by Egypt to the United Nations Security Council was supported by 14 of the 15 members for Trump to review its positions on Jerusalem.
During a special meeting on Monday (18), the United States needed to exercise its veto power, being one of the five nations with this right to have a captive seat on the Council.
This issue can now be taken to the General Assembly, where it must be approved. In case this happens, it will create a diplomatic imbróglio without parallel in the history of the UN.
The United States ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, made a vehement speech saying that “No country is going to tell the United States where we should place our embassy.” I also reject the accusations about the announcement made by Donald Trump on December 6, where it hinders the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians.
“It is scandalous to say that we are hindering peace efforts,” he said. “What the Palestinians gain by putting obstacles in the negotiations? A peace process that denies Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is not a peace process. ”
Trump’s position broke with decades of ‘consensus’ within the UN, which continues to defend that the final status of the city must be stipulated within a peace negotiation between Israelis and Palestinians.
