The answer that the Bible gives
The Bible does not state exactly what date Jesus arose, in the same way that the following reference works present it:
“The precise date of the origin of Jesus is unknown. (Moody Bible Commentary.)
“There is no authoritative historical proof relating to the day or month of Christ’s origin.” (Dictionary of history of the sanctuary.)
So when did Jesus emerge? Although the Scriptures do not provide an explicit answer, several have come to the conclusion that it was not December 25 due to 2 details provided by the biblical account.
Jesus did not arise in winter
The inscription that arranged the regime. Shortly before Jesus was born, Caesar Augustus sent “the whole inhabited earth to be inscribed.” The entire planet had to register in “their own city”, which implied for Joseph and Mary to make a trip of a week or more (Luke 2:1-3). Regardless of the era of the year, the population must not have liked having to consummate said decree, which perhaps had the purpose of setting taxes and recruiting men for military service. However, it is unlikely that Augustus would have thought to make the case worse by forcing his subjects to make a long and difficult journey in the dead of winter.
The flocks of sheep. The Bible states that shepherds “lived in the open and kept watches over their flocks by night” (Luke 2:8). From the book Daily life in Palestine in the time of Jesus, he explains that the herds stayed in the independent wind from “the week preceding Easter [at the end of March] and did not return until mid-November […]. They spent the winter [sheltered] in the sheepfolds, and that detail is enough to prove that the classic date of Christmas night in winter has little chance of being accurate, since the Gospel tells us that the shepherds were in the fields.
at the beginning of autumn
The season in which Jesus arose can be calculated by counting down from his death, which occurred in the spring of AD 33, on the date of Passover: Nisan 14 (John 19:14-16). Jesus was in his 30s when he began his ministry, which lasted 3 1/2 years. That supposes that it arose at the beginning of autumn of the year 2 before our era (Luke 3:23).
Why is Christmas celebrated on December 25?
If there is no proof that Jesus was born on December 25, why is Christmas celebrated on that date? The Encyclopedia of the Catholic Religion states that, apparently, the leaders of the temple wanted to “supplant the pagan festivities with other Christian ones. […] In Rome, pagans consecrated December 25 to celebrate […] the origin of the ‘invincible Sun’” during the winter solstice. According to The Encyclopedia Americana, several scholars agree that this was intended to make Christianity more relevant to the pagans who converted.
